Fusion Ravioli

When we talk about “Fusion Ravioli,” we’re referring to a dish that unites different culinary traditions. In this version, I propose ravioli that combine Italian cuisine with Asian influences. We’ll prepare ravioli with a filling inspired by Far Eastern flavors.

Ingredients

For the ravioli dough:

  • 200 g of 00 flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 pinch of salt

For the filling:

  • 200 g of ground meat (you can choose between pork, beef, or chicken)
  • 1 tablespoon of soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon of finely chopped green onions
  • 1 clove of garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon of fresh grated ginger
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon of chopped fresh cilantro (optional)

For the dressing:

  • Soy sauce
  • Sesame oil
  • Chopped green onions
  • Toasted sesame seeds

Preparation

  1. Start by preparing the dough: place the flour in a mound on a work surface, add the eggs and salt in the center, and begin kneading until you obtain a smooth and elastic dough. Let it rest covered for about 30 minutes.

  2. Meanwhile, prepare the filling: in a bowl, combine the ground meat with the soy sauce, sesame oil, green onions, garlic, ginger, sugar, black pepper to taste, and the chopped fresh cilantro if using. Mix all the ingredients well.

  3. Roll out the ravioli dough using a pasta machine or a rolling pin until you obtain a thin sheet.

  4. Using a round cutter or a glass, cut circles from the dough sheet.

  5. Place a teaspoon of filling in the center of each dough circle, then fold in half, sealing the edges to form the ravioli. Make sure the edges are well sealed to prevent the filling from leaking during cooking.

  6. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the ravioli for about 2-4 minutes or until they float to the surface.

  7. Meanwhile, prepare the dressing by mixing a little soy sauce with a drizzle of sesame oil, chopped green onions, and toasted sesame seeds in a small bowl.

  8. Drain the ravioli and toss them with the prepared dressing.

Trivia

The concept of fusion in cooking is quite recent compared to the millennia-old history of ravioli. The idea of mixing ingredients and techniques from different cultures emerged in the last century and gained momentum with globalization, giving rise to countless creative variations of traditional dishes, such as these Italian ravioli with Asian flavors.
