Porridge

Porridge is a typically British dish, very simple to prepare and which offers ample room for variations, even Italian-style. Here is a basic porridge recipe that you can customize according to your tastes.

Ingredients

  • 40-50 grams of oat flakes
  • 250-300 ml of milk or a plant-based drink (such as almond milk, soy milk, etc.)
  • A pinch of salt
  • Sweeteners to taste, such as honey, sugar, maple syrup
  • Fresh or dried fruit, nuts or seeds for garnish

Preparation

  1. Place the oat flakes in a pot and add the milk or plant-based drink.
  2. Bring slowly to a boil, stirring occasionally.
  3. Once the mixture starts to boil, reduce the heat and let simmer for 5 minutes, continuing to stir until the porridge becomes creamy.
  4. Add a pinch of salt and remove from heat.
  5. Serve the porridge in a bowl and add your favorite sweetener.
  6. Garnish with fresh or dried fruit to taste.

For a more Italian-style version, you could replace regular milk with almond or hazelnut milk for a more Mediterranean flavor, and add a pinch of cinnamon or vanilla to flavor. You can also top the dish with a mix of dried fruit and dark chocolate shavings for a touch of sweetness and crunch.

Fun Facts

Porridge is an extremely versatile dish. In Anglo-Saxon countries it is traditionally consumed for breakfast, but you could make it a sophisticated dessert by adding a tablespoon of red fruit compote and some fresh mint leaves, or a protein-rich breakfast with a bit of peanut butter and sliced bananas.
