Potato Pie
17/11/2023Potato pie is a delicious and comforting dish, perfect as a side or main course. Here’s how to prepare it the Italian way.
Ingredients
- 1 kg potatoes
- 2 eggs
- 100 g grated Parmesan cheese
- 100 g butter
- 100 ml milk
- Grated nutmeg to taste
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Breadcrumbs for sprinkling
- 150 g cooked ham cut into cubes (optional)
- 150 g mozzarella or other melting cheese, cut into cubes (optional)
Preparation

First, boil the potatoes after washing them thoroughly. Once boiled, drain, peel, and mash them while still hot using a potato ricer.

Add the eggs, Parmesan, a pinch of nutmeg, salt, pepper to the mashed potatoes and mix everything together. If the consistency is too thick, add a little milk until you get a soft but not liquid mixture.

Take a baking dish, grease the bottom with a bit of butter and sprinkle with breadcrumbs. Pour half of the mashed potatoes into the dish, distribute the ham and mozzarella cubes if you chose to use them, then cover with the remaining mashed potatoes.

Level the surface, distribute butter flakes on top and a dusting of breadcrumbs. Finally, place in a preheated oven at 200 °C and bake for about 20-30 minutes, or until the surface is golden and crispy.

Remove the potato pie from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving.

Potato pie can be enriched with various ingredients depending on tastes and local traditions. There are versions with added mushrooms, crumbled sausage, spinach or whatever you prefer, turning it into an ever-new and personalized dish. Moreover, this dish is great for recycling leftover mashed potatoes, giving life to a completely new preparation.
