Stuffed Bread

Stuffed bread can be interpreted in many ways and filled with a variety of different ingredients. Here I propose a classic Italian-style stuffed bread recipe, which we can call “Rustic Stuffed Bread.” If you have specific preferences or would like a particular variation, just let me know and we’ll customize the recipe together!

Ingredients

  • 1 round country-style loaf (you can also use a pagnotta or a baguette)
  • 150 g sliced cooked or dry-cured ham
  • 150 g mozzarella, preferably buffalo mozzarella, sliced or diced
  • 100 g mushrooms (fresh or oil-packed), sliced
  • 2-3 ripe tomatoes, sliced
  • A few fresh basil leaves
  • Extra-virgin olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Oregano (optional)
  • Garlic powder (optional)

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 °C.
  2. Cut off the top of the loaf to create a “lid.” Remove the lid and hollow out the inside of the bread, leaving a roughly 2 cm thick wall.
  3. In a bowl, mix the filling ingredients: ham, mozzarella, mushrooms, tomatoes and basil. Season with olive oil, salt, pepper, oregano and garlic powder to taste.
  4. Fill the hollowed-out loaf with the prepared mixture. Be sure to distribute the filling evenly.
  5. Place the lid back on the stuffed loaf.
  6. Wrap the loaf in aluminum foil.
  7. Bake for about 20-30 minutes, until the mozzarella is fully melted and the bread is slightly crisp.
  8. Carefully remove from the oven and let rest for a few minutes before slicing.

Trivia

Stuffed bread is a versatile preparation perfect for sharing, a one-dish meal that lends itself to countless variations. In Italy it is commonly found at outdoor gatherings or picnics, where each family brings its own version, creating a true festival of flavors. Remember you can vary the ingredients according to your taste or whatever you have on hand: different cured meats, grilled vegetables, other cheeses, or even a vegetarian version without ham.

Enjoy your meal!
