Aromatic Steamed Meatballs

Aromatic steamed meatballs are a delicious and light dish, an excellent choice if you’re looking for something different for your meal. Here’s how to prepare them:

Ingredients

  • 500g ground meat (you can choose between beef, pork, chicken or a mix)
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons breadcrumbs
  • 1 clove of garlic finely chopped
  • 1 small onion very finely chopped
  • 1 handful of fresh parsley chopped
  • 1 handful of fresh basil chopped (or another aromatic herb of your choice)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Extra virgin olive oil

Preparation

  1. In a large bowl, mix the ground meat with the egg and breadcrumbs.
  2. Add the chopped garlic, onion, parsley and basil. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Combine all ingredients well until you obtain a homogeneous mixture.
  4. Form small meatballs with the mixture, making sure they are all the same size for even cooking.
  5. Prepare a steamer basket. If you don’t have a specific one for steaming, you can use a colander or a bamboo basket over a pot of boiling water.
  6. Lightly grease the basket with a little oil to prevent the meatballs from sticking.
  7. Arrange the meatballs in the basket, leaving a little space between each to allow steam to pass through.
  8. Cover and steam for about 15-20 minutes or until completely cooked inside.

I recommend serving them with a light sauce, such as a yogurt and herb sauce or a reduced soy sauce.

Alternatively, for an Italian touch, you can add some grated Parmesan to the mixture and serve the meatballs with a fresh tomato and basil sauce. This will make them even more flavorful and suitable for a Mediterranean context.
