Chocolate Cookies

I will provide you with a classic recipe for chocolate cookies with an Italian touch.

Ingredients

  • 125 g softened butter
  • 100 g brown sugar
  • 125 g granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 225 g 00 flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 200 g dark chocolate chips (or chocolate cut into pieces)

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 °C and prepare a baking tray by lining it with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter with the brown sugar and granulated sugar until creamy.
  3. Add the egg and vanilla extract and mix well to combine the ingredients.
  4. In another bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda and salt, then add them to the butter and sugar cream.
  5. Incorporate the chocolate chips into the dough with a wooden spoon or a spatula.
  6. Using two spoons or an ice cream scoop, place mounds of dough on the baking tray, leaving some space between them as they will expand during baking.
  7. Bake the cookies in the center of the oven for about 10-12 minutes or until the edges are golden but the center is still soft.
  8. Let the cookies cool on the baking tray for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

The Italian touch: to make these cookies even more irresistible, you could add a handful of chopped hazelnuts to the dough for a nod to the flavors of traditional Piedmontese gianduia.

Fun Fact

In American culture, the chocolate chip cookie is considered a true classic, and like many traditional recipes, it has a casual origin. It is said that Ruth Graves Wakefield, owner of the Toll House Inn in Massachusetts, came up with these cookies in the 1930s when she decided to add pieces of chocolate to a dough intended for butter cookies, expecting the chocolate to melt evenly into the dough. The unexpected result was so delicious that it immediately became famous.
