Fried Calamari with Lime

Fried calamari is a beloved dish in many countries, especially in Italy where fried fish is a fascinating culinary tradition. Adding lime gives a touch of freshness that pairs well with the flavor of the calamari.

Ingredients

  • 500 g cleaned calamari, cut into rings
  • Juice of one lime
  • Grated zest of one lime
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste
  • 100 g flour
  • Oil for frying

Preparation

  1. In a bowl, season the calamari rings with salt and pepper.
  2. Add the lime juice and let marinate for about 15-30 minutes. This will help tenderize the calamari and add flavor.
  3. Heat the oil in a pan or fryer to a temperature of 180 °C.
  4. Meanwhile, drain the calamari from the marinade and pat them dry lightly with paper towels.
  5. Coat the calamari rings in flour, making sure to flour them evenly.
  6. Fry the rings in hot oil until golden and crispy, usually 2-3 minutes.
  7. Remove the calamari from the oil with a slotted spoon and let them drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  8. While still hot, lightly sprinkle them with the grated lime zest.

Serve immediately to enjoy the calamari at their maximum crispiness and flavor.

Trivia

Calamari is a very versatile ingredient, famous not only in Mediterranean traditions but also in Asia, where it is often used in salads or stir-fried with strong spices. Using lime instead of lemon is an excellent alternative for a different twist. In some Italo-Asian preparations, calamari can be served with a separate sauce, such as wasabi mayonnaise to add a spicy and unusual experience.
