Fried Pizza Strips
17/11/2023Fried pizza strips are a tasty and simple appetizer or snack to prepare. Remember that, as a good Italian, I always have a soft spot for variants that include typically local ingredients! So I’ll present you with a basic recipe that you can then customize to your liking.
Ingredients
- 250g pizza dough (you can buy it ready-made or make it yourself)
- Seed oil for frying
- Salt
- Pepper
- Oregano
- Other seasonings to taste: Grated Parmesan, anchovies, diced cherry tomatoes, arugula, etc.
Preparation
- If you purchased ready-made dough, let it come to room temperature.
- Roll out the dough to a thickness of about half a centimeter.
- Cut the dough into strips, in the shape and size you prefer.
- Heat plenty of seed oil in a pan and bring to a temperature of 180 °C.
- Fry the strips a few at a time until golden and crispy.
- Remove the strips from the oil with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to remove excess oil.
- Season with salt, pepper, and oregano while still hot.
- If desired, add other seasonings to taste, such as Parmesan shavings, anchovies, or cherry tomatoes.
Fried pizza strips are perfect on their own or accompanied by a dipping sauce, such as a spicy one or a yogurt and herb sauce. Enjoy your meal!
Fun Fact
This dish can be considered a street food variant of classic pizza, and is somewhat reminiscent of savory zeppole. In some areas of Italy, the strips are enriched with other typical regional ingredients, such as ‘nduja in Calabria or guanciale in Lazio.
