Macedonia

Macedonia is a classic dessert made with fresh fruit, very easy to prepare and perfect for concluding a meal or as a healthy snack. The beauty of macedonia is that you can customize it with your favorite fruits or those in season.

Ingredients

  • Fresh fruit to taste (for example apples, pears, bananas, oranges, strawberries, grapes, kiwi, peaches, pineapple, and so on)
  • Sugar (optional)
  • Lemon juice
  • Optionally, a splash of liqueur such as Maraschino or Grand Marnier (optional)
  • Mint leaves for decoration (optional)

Preparation

  1. Wash all the fruit well.
  2. Peel the fruit that needs to be peeled, such as apples, pears, bananas, and kiwi.
  3. Cut all the fruit into pieces or slices of uniform size and place it in a large bowl.
  4. If you like, you can add a bit of sugar to taste to further sweeten the fruit.
  5. Squeeze some lemon juice over the cut fruit to prevent it from oxidizing (browning) and to add a touch of freshness.
  6. If desired, for a more adult version, add a splash of liqueur.
  7. Gently mix the fruit to evenly distribute the lemon juice and, if used, the sugar and liqueur.
  8. Let the macedonia rest in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving, so the flavors mix well together.
  9. When serving, decorate with mint leaves for a touch of color and freshness.

Trivia

Macedonia takes its name from the homonymous geographical region of the Balkans, famous for its diversity of populations and cultures. By analogy, fruit macedonia is a varied and colorful assortment of different fruits. In Italy, it is often dressed with sugar, lemon juice, and sometimes with a bit of sweet wine or liqueur, to enhance the taste of the fruit.
