Pancakes with Maple Syrup

Making pancakes with maple syrup is very simple. I will provide you with a basic recipe to which I will also add an Italian touch. Here are the necessary ingredients and the procedure.

Ingredients

  • 135 g wheat flour
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
  • A pinch of salt
  • 130 ml of milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons of melted butter (plus a little for greasing the pan)
  • Maple syrup for serving

Preparation

  1. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  2. In another bowl, lightly beat the egg and pour in the milk and melted butter. Mix well.
  3. Pour the egg and milk mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients, stirring just enough to combine. Do not worry if the batter is a bit lumpy.
  4. Heat a non-stick pan or griddle over medium heat and grease with a little butter.
  5. Pour a small amount of batter for each pancake and cook for about 2 minutes, until you see bubbles forming on the surface. When this happens, flip and cook for another 1-2 minutes on the other side.
  6. Serve the pancakes still hot with maple syrup poured on top.

To add an Italian touch, you can also serve the pancakes with lightly sweetened ricotta drizzled with a thread of maple syrup, or perhaps accompany with slices of fresh fruit such as apples or pears finely sliced and lightly caramelized in a pan with a touch of butter and sugar.

Trivia

Although pancakes are a very popular breakfast in North America, they have ancient roots and similar recipes can be found in many cultures, such as crêpes in France or blini in Russia. Furthermore, the marriage between sweet (pancakes and maple syrup) and savory (the ricotta) is a delicious representation of how contrasts in the kitchen often create unforgettable dishes.
