Pasta with Tuna, Onions, and Apples
17/11/2023Pasta with tuna, onions, and apples is an unusual but interesting dish thanks to the mix of sweet and savory flavors. Here’s how to proceed with the preparation of this dish.
Ingredients
- 320 grams of pasta (penne, farfalle or spaghetti are fine)
- 1 green apple (Granny Smith for example), peeled and cut into cubes
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 160 grams of canned tuna, drained
- Extra virgin olive oil to taste
- Salt and pepper to taste
- A pinch of oregano or thyme (optional)
- Lemon juice to taste (optional)
- Fresh chopped parsley for garnish (optional)
Preparation
-
Bring a pot of salted water to a boil for the pasta. Once boiling, cook the pasta according to the package instructions. Drain al dente, reserving some cooking water.
-
Meanwhile, in a large skillet, heat a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and sauté the onion over medium-low heat until it becomes translucent. Add a pinch of salt to help the onions release their juices and soften.
-
Add the apple cubes to the skillet and let them cook for a few minutes until they start to caramelize slightly. If desired, you can drizzle the apples with a bit of lemon juice to prevent browning and add some acidity.
-
Add the drained tuna to the onions and apples, breaking it up slightly with a fork if the pieces are too large. Stir gently and let the flavors combine for a couple of minutes. Adjust with salt and pepper, and if desired, add a pinch of oregano or thyme.
-
Add the drained pasta to the sauce in the skillet. If the mixture is too dry, add a bit of cooking water to combine better and create a light creaminess. Stir well to distribute the sauce evenly.
-
Serve the pasta hot, garnished with fresh chopped parsley if desired.
This recipe may surprise with the pairing of apples and onions with tuna, but the contrast between the sweetness of the apples and the savoriness of the tuna can offer a pleasant tasting experience. Buon appetito!
