Sausage Meatballs

Sausage meatballs are a tasty dish and quite simple to make. Here’s how to prepare them.

Ingredients

  • 500 grams of sausage
  • 1 egg
  • 50 grams of grated Parmesan
  • 2 tablespoons of breadcrumbs (and a little more for breading)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Oil for frying
  • (Optional) a pinch of nutmeg or aromatic herbs such as chopped parsley

Preparation

  1. Start by slitting the sausage casing and removing it so you can use only the meat. Crumble the meat into a bowl.
  2. Add the egg, grated Parmesan, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper and, if you like, a pinch of nutmeg or some chopped aromatic herbs. Mix well until you obtain a homogeneous mixture. If the dough is too soft, add more breadcrumbs until you reach the desired consistency.
  3. Take portions of the mixture and shape into walnut-sized meatballs, then roll them in breadcrumbs to coat well.
  4. Heat plenty of oil in a pan and when hot, fry the meatballs until golden and crispy on all sides.
  5. Drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  6. Serve the meatballs hot as an appetizer or main course, accompanied, if desired, with a sauce of your choice.

Fun Facts

Sausage meatballs can vary greatly depending on Italian regional customs. In some versions, for example, you might find the addition of chopped wild fennel, which pairs perfectly with the taste of pork. Additionally, they can also be baked for a lighter but equally tasty version.
