Strawberry and Chocolate Trifle
17/11/2023The Strawberry and Chocolate Trifle is a spoon dessert of English origin, but I propose an Italian-style variant. Here is the recipe:
Ingredients
- 500 g fresh strawberries
- 200 g ladyfingers or sponge cake
- 150 g dark chocolate
- 500 ml custard
- 250 ml whipping cream
- 3 tablespoons powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons orange liqueur or alchermes (optional)
- Chocolate shavings for garnish
Preparation
- Start by washing and cleaning the strawberries. Cut half of the strawberries into pieces and leave the other half whole for the final decoration.
- If you choose to use the liqueur, mix it with a little water to dilute it and soak the ladyfingers or sponge cake.
- Melt the chocolate in a double boiler or in the microwave, being careful not to burn it.
- Now proceed to assemble the trifle in a large glass bowl or in individual glasses: start with a first layer of ladyfingers, then add a layer of melted chocolate.
- Continue with a layer of custard, then one of strawberry pieces.
- Whip the cream with the powdered sugar and add another layer of whipped cream.
- Repeat the layers until the bowl or glasses are filled, finishing with a final layer of whipped cream.
- Garnish the surface with whole strawberries and chocolate shavings.
- Let it rest in the refrigerator for at least a couple of hours before serving.
The Strawberry and Chocolate Trifle is a dessert that combines the freshness of the fruit with the intensity of the chocolate, creating a pleasant balance on the palate.
Trivia
The Trifle originated in the 16th century in England as an evolution of a simpler dessert called “fool”, and has since undergone multiple variations. The modern version involves the use of fruit, cream, and sponge cake or soaked biscuits, layered on top of each other. Some variations include the addition of gelatin or alcohol such as sherry or sweet wine. Over time, Trifle has become a dessert appreciated in many parts of the world and adapted with local ingredients.
