Strawberry Crumble Cake

Here is the recipe for a delicious Strawberry Crumble Cake with an Italian touch.

Ingredients

  • 250 g fresh strawberries
  • 200 g 00 flour
  • 100 g sugar
  • 100 g cold butter, cubed
  • 1 egg
  • 1 lemon (grated zest)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • A pinch of salt
  • Powdered sugar (for decorating, optional)
  • (Optional) One tablespoon of balsamic vinegar to enhance the flavor of the strawberries

Preparation

  1. Take a bowl and start preparing the crumble dough by working together the flour, sugar, cold butter cubed, the grated zest of the lemon, the baking powder and the salt. Knead until you obtain a sandy mixture.
  2. In a baking pan, spread half of the crumble mixture forming a uniform base.
  3. Wash and cut the strawberries into pieces (if desired, you can add a tablespoon of balsamic vinegar to the strawberries to intensify their flavor) and distribute them over the crumble base in the pan.
  4. Cover the strawberries with the remaining crumbled dough.
  5. Lightly beat the egg and brush the surface of the crumble for a more even golden color.
  6. Bake in a preheated oven at 180 °C for about 30 minutes or until the surface appears golden and crispy.
  7. Once baked, let the cake cool before dusting it with powdered sugar to decorate, if desired.

Trivia

The crumble has British origins, but the addition of balsamic vinegar is an Italian trick to enhance its flavor. Moreover, in Italy it is common to find desserts with fresh fruit, especially in the appropriate seasons. Strawberries, in particular, are very popular because they add a touch of freshness and vibrant color to desserts.
