Stuffed Mozzarella Roll

The stuffed mozzarella roll is a delicious and tempting dish, perfect for appetizers or cold plates on special occasions. Here is the recipe to prepare a tasty mozzarella roll with an Italian touch.

Ingredients

  • 1 large buffalo mozzarella or 2 medium
  • 150 g thinly sliced prosciutto crudo
  • 100 g washed and dried arugula
  • 50 g sun-dried tomatoes in oil
  • Dried oregano to taste
  • Extra virgin olive oil to taste
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste

Preparation

  1. Start by gently opening the buffalo mozzarella: make a spiral cut from the top, as if peeling an apple, keeping the mozzarella connected by a thin layer.

  2. Lay the opened mozzarella on a sheet of plastic wrap. Try to form as regular a rectangle as possible.

  3. Arrange the prosciutto crudo slices over the mozzarella, creating an even layer.

  4. Add the arugula on top of the prosciutto, and scatter the sun-dried tomatoes cut into strips, distributing them evenly.

  5. Sprinkle everything with a pinch of salt, pepper, oregano, and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.

  6. Starting from one long side of the rectangle, roll up the mozzarella using the plastic wrap to form a tight roll.

  7. Seal the roll well with the plastic wrap, shaping it and ensuring it is tightly closed.

  8. Place the roll in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving, so it firms up and is easier to slice.

  9. When ready to serve, remove the plastic wrap and cut the roll into slices about 2 cm thick.

  10. Arrange the stuffed roll slices on a serving platter and, if desired, garnish with a drizzle of oil and arugula leaves.

Fun Fact

The mozzarella roll can also be stuffed with other combinations, such as smoked salmon and cream cheese, grilled vegetables, or pesto and pine nuts. The idea of opening the mozzarella and stuffing it is very similar to the technique used for the “reverse” Caprese, in which the mozzarella is filled with tomato and basil, creating a surprise on a typically Italian plate.
