Whole Wheat Cookies

Whole wheat cookies are a healthy and tasty choice for a snack or to accompany tea or coffee. Here is the recipe to prepare simple whole wheat cookies.

Ingredients

  • 200 g whole wheat flour
  • 100 g brown sugar (or another type of natural sweetener of your choice)
  • 100 g butter at room temperature
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • A pinch of salt
  • (Optional) Flavoring of your choice, such as vanilla or cinnamon, or additions like chopped dried fruit or chocolate chips

Preparation

  1. Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper and preheat the oven to 180 °C.
  2. In a bowl, mix the whole wheat flour with the baking powder and salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream the softened butter with the brown sugar until you obtain a homogeneous and creamy mixture.
  4. Add the egg to the butter and sugar mixture and continue mixing. If you want to add a flavor like vanilla or cinnamon, add it at this stage.
  5. Gradually incorporate the dry ingredients (the flour with the baking powder and salt) into the wet mixture until forming a homogeneous dough. If you want to add chocolate chips or dried fruit, this is the right time to do so.
  6. With your hands, form balls of dough and flatten them slightly to shape the cookies. Arrange the cookies on the baking sheet leaving a bit of space between each other.
  7. Bake the cookies for about 10-15 minutes or until they have turned golden brown.
  8. Once baked, remove the cookies from the oven and let them cool completely on a wire rack before serving.

Fun Facts

Whole wheat cookies are not only delicious, but they also provide an extra boost of fiber thanks to the whole wheat flour. Additionally, the butter can be replaced with coconut oil or vegetable margarine in case of vegan diets. Remember that you can always customize your cookies with chocolate, nuts, seeds, or dried fruit to add different flavors and textures.
