Wonton soup

Wonton Soup is a classic Chinese cuisine dish known all over the world. Here’s how you could prepare a version with an Italian touch:

Ingredients

  • For the wontons:
    • 200 g ground pork
    • 100 g shrimp, chopped
    • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
    • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
    • 1 teaspoon sugar
    • A handful of chopped green onions
    • Salt and pepper to taste
    • Wonton wrapper sheets, ready to use
  • For the broth:
    • 1.5 liters chicken broth
    • 1 garlic clove, crushed
    • 2 cm fresh ginger, sliced
    • Salt and pepper to taste
    • A drizzle of extra virgin olive oil for an Italian finish

Preparation

  1. In a bowl, combine the ground pork, chopped shrimp, soy sauce, sesame oil, sugar, chopped green onions, salt and pepper. Mix well to create the wonton filling.
  2. Take a wonton wrapper and place a heaping teaspoon of filling in the center. Wet the edges with water and fold the wrapper in half to form a triangle, pressing the edges to seal them. For a more artistic touch, you can pinch the edges to create pleats.
  3. Bring the chicken broth to a boil in a large pot. Add the garlic, ginger, salt, pepper, and for a unique note, a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.
  4. Reduce to a simmer and cook the wontons for about 5-8 minutes, or until they float to the surface and the wrapper is cooked.
  5. Serve the Wonton Soup hot, with a sprinkle of fresh chopped green onions and, if desired, a handful of finely sliced leafy greens for a touch of color and freshness.

Note that wonton wrappers can also be made at home with a dough of flour and water if ready-to-use ones are not available. Additionally, you can add vegetables or other aromatic herbs to your Wonton Soup to enrich its flavor according to your taste. Enjoy!
