Cookie Mix in a Jar
17/11/2023Cookie jar mixes are a beautiful gift idea. The concept is to layer the dry ingredients in a glass jar, which the recipient will then use by following the provided instructions to add the wet ingredients and bake the cookies. Here is the recipe for a jar of about 1 liter, enough to make about 24 cookies:
Ingredients
- 250 g flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 100 g rolled oats
- 150 g granulated sugar
- 150 g brown sugar
- 100 g chocolate chips
- 100 g chopped dark chocolate
- 100 g chopped walnuts (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional for a special touch)
Preparation
- In a clean, dry jar, start layering the ingredients in the order listed. Make sure to compact each layer with a spoon or by simply tapping the jar on a flat surface to make room for all the ingredients.
- Close the jar with an airtight lid.
- Decorate it as you like and attach a label with the instructions for the final use of the additional ingredients and for baking the cookies.
Instructions to attach to the jar: To make the cookies, empty the contents of the jar into a large bowl and mix. Add:
- 1 lightly beaten egg
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 125 g melted and cooled butter
Mix until the mixture is well combined. Take small portions of dough and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in a preheated oven at 180 °C for 10-12 minutes, or until the cookies are golden. Let cool on a wire rack before serving.
Trivia
Cookie jar mixes are inspired by the American tradition of “Mason Jar Cookies,” that is, cookies in a glass jar, very popular in the United States as a DIY gift idea during the holidays. The beauty of this preparation lies in the fact that you can customize the layers as you prefer, changing the type of chocolate, adding dried fruit or different spices to make each jar unique.
