Fried Tofu
17/11/2023I can provide you with a recipe to prepare delicious fried tofu. Here is my version with an Italian touch, perhaps using breadcrumbs flavored with Mediterranean herbs for the coating.
Ingredients
- 200 g of tofu
- 50 g of flour
- 2 eggs
- 100 g of breadcrumbs
- 1 teaspoon of dried Italian aromatic herbs (basil, oregano, rosemary)
- Salt, to taste
- Pepper, to taste
- Seed oil for frying
Preparation
- Dry the tofu well with paper towels and cut it into cubes or slices about 1-1.5 cm thick.
- In three separate shallow dishes, arrange the flour, the beaten eggs with a pinch of salt and pepper, and the breadcrumbs mixed with the dried aromatic herbs.
- Coat the tofu pieces first in the flour, making sure it’s covered on all sides, then in the egg, and finally in the breadcrumbs, pressing so that the coating adheres well.
- Heat the seed oil in a large pan until it reaches a temperature of about 180 °C.
- Fry the breaded tofu in hot oil until golden and crispy on all sides. This should take about 2-3 minutes per side. Avoid overlapping the tofu pieces while frying to ensure even cooking.
- Remove the fried tofu from the oil with a slotted spoon and let it drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
- Serve hot, perhaps with a side sauce like soy sauce, spicy mayo, or sweet and sour sauce.
Fun Fact
Tofu is a key ingredient in Asian cuisine, especially vegetarian and vegan, as it is rich in proteins. The crispy and golden coating in this recipe contrasts with its soft internal texture, making the dish appealing even to those who normally do not appreciate tofu. For a lighter variant, the tofu can also be baked instead of fried.
